Why You Can’t Be Anything You Want

We have all heard the most awesome, uplifting chant echoing in the streets, “you can be anything you want as long as you put your mind to it”.

Well, life lied to you.

It’s like my mom always says “listen to God and your parents because you do NOT want to learn from life”. I mean, the idea is pretty amazing and it makes total sense, right? We hear success story upon success story of people who had nothing and now have everything, who dropped college and are now billionaires, and some of these people make even more money now telling you their formula to success.  That’s just it. It’s THEIR formula, not yours.

Part of the reason why we believe the lie is because we always hear the story from the winning side, which, most often than not, are the exception to the rule (this reminds me of this verse in the Bible that says “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong” – 1 Corinthians 1:27). Have you ever been introduced to or have taken the time to listen to the losing side?

Then you say “they just didn’t try hard enough”. Not so fast! I know a boat load of people who tried their entire lives to become what they envisioned themselves to become, did everything right, I mean perfectly right. Gosh, I know tons of talented singers and bands with the right music, the right look, the right marketing, the right team, the right attitude, the right knowledge and are still playing in restaurants.

And what about the people who became everything they dreamed of but are still frustrated? And the people who are completely fulfilled even though they’re not doing what they love at all and know they will never do? What’s up with that?

“Oh but I’m an exception to the rule”, you say. You are? Congrats, prodigy! But even if you are, it still means there are tons of other people who, although they will work as hard or harder than you, they will still never be. The “you can be anything you want” thingy simply has never been a reality for everyone who put their mind into it. There are simply no opportunities for everyone. Can you imagine if everybody thought they were the exception to the rule? The world runs on a supply and demand dynamics (not on Dunkin’, ha!).

Unfortunately, we emphasize passion over discipline. We believe the world will end up adapting to us instead of us adapting to the world. We equate what we do to who we are and believe this is what brings us fulfillment. All in the name of positivity. This is the core of the problem. Too much of everything kills, even positivity.

Always hope for the highest but expect the lowest from the world. The world owes you nothing but God always has what you need. A shot of reality sucks sometimes, I know. But, trust me, it will, one day, bring you the happy ending you always wished to have and would never have any other way.

The Bible Told in Star Wars Lines

In the spirit of #StarWarsTheForceAwakens …

“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” God decided it was good to create humans so He can be a father to them. God’s trinity created the universe, the darkness and the light, you and me, and invited us into the light side, “we would be honored if you would join us”, “I am your father”.

Men had it good with God until the day they were presented with a deceiving proposal, “give yourself to the dark side”. The devil enticed Adam and Eve with the idea of being like God, persuading them into the thought of being gods themselves, “Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter.”

He encouraged them to leave God, go live life their own way and confront God’s authority, being their own lord. “When I left you, I was but a learner; now I am the master”.

Adam & Eve saw this forbidden fruit was good, ate it and realized they had fallen into temptation. When they saw they were deceived, they denied everything, “it’s not my fault” and blamed the devil, who had to come clean, “So what I told you was true… from a certain point of view”.  “A certain point of view?”, Adam replies. The devil laughs, “You’ll find I’m full of surprises“.

God, seeing all this, had to apply his justice and put everybody back in their places. God exhorts Adam & Eve,”Your focus determines your reality”. “Your overconfidence is your weakness.”, “That is why you fail”. “If you only knew the power of the dark side!”

Adam & Eve started to understand what they had done and regret it,“If you’re saying that coming here was a bad idea, I’m starting to agree with you”.

But it was too late. God had removed them from his presence and cast the devil right out of heaven, who became full of revenge and eager to destroy the entire humanity that was to come, “Strike me down, and I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.”

As humans were born of Adam & Eve and genetically carried their sinful tendencies, humanity became a mess away from God’s day to day influence. God decided to do something about it and give humans a chance to, one day, live in His presence again, in the light side. So He comes in the form of a human being but born of a virgin woman so his blood line is pure, as it was the requirement that only pure blood of a perfect human could erase any taint of sin in humanity. Jesus Christ was born and the heavens proclaimed, “The Force is strong with this one”.

Jesus taught that men could never be good enough by their own efforts to earn their way with God, “You don’t have to do this to impress me”. Jesus preached salvation to many and called them to a life-changing decision, to believe in him or reject him. “Try not. Do… or do not. There is no try”.

Some people would be amazed by his miracles,  “in my experience there is no such thing as luck”, some would doubt every minute of it, “I don’t believe it”, “It’s a trap”.  Others would come to realization that they needed Jesus, “Somebody has to save our skins”, “You are the chosen one!”.

The religious leaders of the time who were more interested in political control than to love God and care for the people, saw the popularity of Jesus and how he was affecting the system. Every time Jesus would question their teachings, they would become more and more infuriated, “We have — ungh! — powerful friends. You’re going to regret this”. So they started plotting against him and partnered with Judas Iscariot to kill him. Eventually, Judas and his powerful friends capture Jesus, taking him to the cross to die. Jesus, knowing all this beforehand, makes it known to Judas, “You are part of the rebel alliance and a traitor”.

While in the cross, Jesus spoke his last words and breathes his last breath, “This is some rescue!”. 3 days later, Jesus rose from the dead, showed himself to about 500 people during 40 days, then ascended to Heaven, assuring his followers He would always be there with them one way or another, “I’ll not leave you. I’ve got to save you”.

Judas, as well as all the ones who rejected the opportunity Jesus gave humans to reconcile with God, went to their place of choice, hell. “There’s something not right here. I feel cold… death“, “That place is strong with the dark side of the Force”, Judas says.

God, in tears, replies,  “A domain of evil it is. In you must go”. What’s in there?”, humans reply. God, in heavier tears, replies, “Only what you take with you”. “I’ll never join you”.

As these men were thrown in the pits of hell, they screamed, “So this is how liberty dies…with thunderous applause”.

God, sobbing, replies, “Only at the end do you realize the power of the Dark Side.”

The ones who chose Jesus were taken to Heaven, to live with God forever. To these,  God smiles and says, “This is a new day, a new beginning”, “I won’t fail you”.
